A Blueprint for Chaos

Filmmaker Scott Trotter acquired hours of film fragments—five- and ten-minute excerpts from old Hollywood films, cartoons, and “art” films like Blood of a Poet—and has assembled them, with some reediting, with an eye for absurdist humor. The ten fragments on the reel I saw included cuts from Snow White and the Three Stooges and Hitchcock's Rebecca. The results are amusing, and recall the approach of the surrealists, who tried to divorce a movie's images from its story. The hints of narrative that remain in Trotter's fragments encourage the viewer to see them in terms of personal associations and fantasies.
