A Decade of Love

Ten directors offer quick takes on love in modern Hong Kong. True to type, this 2008 omnibus film is a mixed bag, and production values fall short of its upscale exemplar Paris, Je T'Aime (2006). Still, hits outnumber misses, and there's a lot of indie ingenuity on display throughout. Top honors go to Chan Wing Chiu's “Red Egg on the Road,” in which a benevolent young cabbie helps a tubby old Chinese-American tourist track down his cherished drinking buddy (or perhaps an old lover?) from his salad days in the merchant marines. A notable dud is Takkie Yeung's flashy and pointless “The Last Bid,” in which two business babes compete at auction for a two-timing, debt-ridden banker boyfriend. In English and subtitled Mandarin and Cantonese. 110 min.
