A Dress of Steel Mesh, a play by Kemba Saran, explores the role of women’s words and silences in surviving intimate violence. Charting the course out of abuse and into survival and wonderment, it offers a contemporary contribution on the themes of the poetic ghazal. When Kemba was eighteen, she met a man who claimed that despite her hesitation, their fates were sealed—she was destined to become his wife. Relayed by a chorus of three female voices, A Dress of Steel Mesh offers hope to those inspired to forge a new beginning from a labyrinth of lost dreams.
