A Klingon Christmas Carol Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater) Image

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 21 2014

Sci-fi nerds would do well not to overlook Commedia Beauregard's fifth and last Chicago production of its annual hit, which translates Charles Dickens's holiday classic into the Klingon language (presented with English supertitles). The result, performed largely without irony, looks and sounds like a surreal Comedy Bang! Bang! bit: a 16-person cast hock and spit their way through Scrooge's (or "SQuja's") spectral encounters and undertake to reclaim honor in the bloody Klingon Year Games. There's humor throughout, but the two-act show takes itself more seriously than you'd think. Costumes are top-notch, and improvements introduced over the years—a new set, a script overhaul, an opener of live music—make this production directed by Catie O'Donnell a fittingly polished final voyage. —Dan Jakes
