When: Fridays-Sundays, Tue., April 26 and Wed., April 27. Continues through June 5 2011
Bob Knuth's low-budget revival doesn't live up to the letter of this musically difficult 1973 romantic comedy by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. The acting is sometimes a little ragged, the singing isn't always virtuosic. But Knuth's cast embody its spirit, re-creating with remarkable aplomb the contradictions and ambiguities that make the show by turns sweet, wry, sentimental, cynical, wistful, jaded, and full of hope. The women in the cast are especially inspired, including Anita Hoffman as a middle-aged actress yearning for renewed love, Stephanie Stockstill as a wife far too young for her husband, and Khaki Pixley as a lustful maid servant always up for a pinch and tickle. –Jack Helbig
