A Love Divided

Sydney Macartney's 1999 docudrama recounts the story of an Irish couple in the 1950s whose marriage was threatened by antagonism between Catholics and Protestants. The couple's dilemma—whether to send their daughter to a Protestant school in defiance of a village priest—and the evolution of a personal matter into a national scandal are meticulously laid out by writer Stuart Hepburn (though he can't quite shake the earnest pedantry of the BBC, the film's backer). Macartney pays careful attention to the psychological nuances that divide the community, and the film is full of vivid performances, especially Orla Brady as the distraught yet feisty wife and Tony Doyle as the unyielding priest. With Liam Cunningham. 100 min.
