A Love in Germany

A hausfrau (Hanna Schygulla) has a passionate affair with a Polish prisoner of war (Piotr Lysak) in a small German town during World War II. Andrzej Wajda's films generally lurch between the overblown and the merely incompetent, and he looks his worst when he doesn't have a strident political theme (a la Man of Iron) to cover his tracks. The lovers are so moronic (they don't take the slightest precaution against being detected) that sympathy wanes fairly quickly, and the clumsiness of the mise-en-scene (an alternation of goggling close-ups and flaccid, depthless long shots) takes care of the rest. With Marie-Christine Barrault and Dorothea Moritz.
