A Man Vanishes

Shohei Imamura's 1967 melange of documentary and fiction—of documentary turning into fiction—began when the director selected a banal case from the Tokyo police files and then enlisted the help of the missing man's fiancee. The idea was that Imamura would follow her through her quest, but as she became more conscious of her new star status, she lost interest in the missing man and improvised a movie romance with the actor signed to play against her. With Shigeru Tsuyuguchi. In Japanese with subtitles.
