Modernity coexists with the mystical in this challenging, atmospheric Iranian drama. A wily entrepreneur drives pilgrims to a remote mountain village, the home of an illiterate woman who's said to have mastered the Koran after visiting a nearby shrine. Meanwhile, tales of the woman reach a skeptical old mullah and his traveling companion, a childlike soldier of humble origins who amazes the old man with the depth and sincerity of his prayers. Director Kamal Tabrizi (The Lizard) employs a timeworn theme—that the simple may have greater access to God than the most learned—but it gets a fresh treatment in the film's moving climax. In Farsi and Arabic with subtitles. 90 min.
