A Red Bear

This 2002 crime drama by Argentinean writer-director Adrian Israel Caetano comes close to redeeming one of the hoariest conventions of the genre: the crook who needs to pull off one last job before going straight. Julio Chavez gives an understated performance as the Bear, a recently paroled bandit desperate to reconnect with his wife and daughter. Caetano spends over half the film exploring the tortured relationships among the three, but once the Bear throws in on a daring robbery, the film turns into a gripping caper with an exceedingly bloody denouement. With Soledad Villamil. In Spanish with subtitles. 94 min.
