A Room for Romeo Brass

A sense of authenticity overshadows any contrivance in this subtly classic drama, whose main characters—two 12-year-old boys and a volatile man obsessed with one boy's sister—are drawn with a persuasive combination of naivete and hindsight. (Director Shane Meadows and cowriter Paul Fraser grew up together.) Both Romeo and Gavin crave a role model—their fathers don't cut it—and Morell is at first intriguing and unintimidating, behaving like a kid and treating them like peers. But soon he reveals another aspect of his personality, and the boys have to contend with complicated feelings toward him, their families, and each other. With Andrew Shim, Ben Marshall, and Paddy Considine. 90 min.
