In Harry Kurnitz's adaptation of L'Idiote, the most successful comic mystery by Marcel Achard, the maid Josefa stands accused of killing her paramour after being found unconscious, naked, and with pistol in hand at the scene of the crime. Her wandering testimony is so absurd that it provokes a crisis of integrity in the magistrate, Paul Sevigne, and he determines to exonerate her—much to the chagrin of the prosecutor, who wants the girl sentenced and the scandal squashed. Sevigne's interrogation reveals how Josefa's immodesty stems from a deep willingness to protect men: she even volunteers to secure Sevigne's position by going to prison. Kari Warfield has admirable moxie as the incorruptible Josefa, who leaves us wondering whether true idiocy in a woman is compassion for men above all. —Jena Cutie
