A Sound of Thunder

Peter Hyams has made a career out of directing half-baked sci-fi (Capricorn One, The Relic), and this futuristic clunker, shelved for two years, is no exception. Ben Kingsley pounds the ham as the evil proprietor of Time Safari, which charges fat cats a hefty fee to journey back in time and bag dinosaurs. This is supposedly a big-budget production, though on several occasions the scientist hero (Edward Burns) seems to be walking in place before a rear-projection screen. The script is based on Ray Bradbury's story of the same name but bears only a passing resemblance to his concise meditation on the precariousness of evolution. With Catherine McCormack. PG-13, 103 min.
