A Tale of Two Cities

This 1935 MGM version of the Dickens novel is spectacular as these things go, but Jack Conway's direction is strictly of the Classics Illustrated school. The storming of the Bastille, by far the most memorable scene in the film, was staged by the young Jacques Tourneur, making his American directorial debut. Ronald Colman, Elizabeth Allan, Basil Rathbone, and Edna May Oliver star. 128 min.
