A Taste of Things to Come Closing (Theater and Galleries) Image The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 29 2018

The first act of this colorful, perky, high-spirited musical by Debra Barsha and Hollye Levin tells the story, in dialogue, dance, and song, of four friends living in Winnetka in 1957—three married housewives, one single but looking—and the various ways they cope with a world determined to inhibit their ability to learn, grow, and express themselves. The second act jumps ahead to 1967, a world being changed by the first rumblings of the feminist movement. The acting is energetic, and the original songs cleverly echo hits of the 50s and 60s, but the comic moments are rarely laugh-out-loud funny, and the serious moments have the phony, forced feeling of the “What did you learn today?” moment at the end of a classic TV sitcom. —Jack Helbig
