A Thousand Clowns

Fred Coe directed this apparently eternal cult film, though in his memoirs editor Ralph Rosenblum claims it was saved in the cutting room. “Saved” is probably too strong a word: though Jason Robards, as a zany corporate dropout, doesn't shame himself, and Barbara Harris is actually quite good, the mechanics of the Herb Gardner script show through much too clearly for this to qualify as anything other than shrewdly programmed entertainment. With Martin Balsam and Gene Saks (as “Chuckles the Chipmunk”).
