A Thousand Years of Good Prayers

In this low-key drama (2007) by Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club), an elderly Chinese man (Henry O) comes to stay with his daughter in the U.S. (Faye Yu) and tries to strike a balance between unobtrusiveness and paternal involvement. They maintain a cool civility, but the daughter's long-standing resentment toward him begins to intrude, the origins of which aren't disclosed until late in the story. As in most of Wang's films, a memorable cast of characters compensates for a serviceable plot; especially poignant are those scenes in which the father and an Iranian woman he meets at a local park (Vida Ghahremani) form a strong bond as they share their stories in halting English. 83 min.
