A True Mob Story

Hong Kong pop star Andy Lau is surprisingly likable in this 1998 crime melodrama, playing a cagey, intense, but ultimately pathetic mobster torn between his young son and a life of crime. Director Wong Jing, known for his silly, crowd-pleasing comedies, handles the action with brisk efficiency and invests a tired genre with dazzling, realistic visuals, but the film careens from the maudlin to the cynical to the downright vicious, serving up an endless series of outlandishly violent fights and grisly torture sequences.
