A Very Terrible Father The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays and Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 18 2011

Dream Theatre's usual, macabre sensibilities give way to a surprising tenderness in this new play written and directed by company cofounder Jeremy Menekseoglu, who also stars as Matti, a German man dying of cancer. Matti and his spunky girlfriend, Lilli (also dying; they met in a support group for people with terminal illnesses), travel to Florida to see Matti's teenage daughter, living near Orlando with her mother and a tool of a stepfather. The script--and rather intrusive soundtrack--get increasingly mawkish as the show goes on. But the corn is at least partially redeemed by touching scenes during which Matti and Mishelle Apalategui's charmingly quirky Lilli convey their determination to grab any scrap of happiness while they still can. --Zac Thompson
