Though he wasn’t one of the founders of A$AP Mob, A$AP Rocky has been its de facto chairman since his single “Purple Swag” blew up, helping him land a massive deal with RCA that included seven figures earmarked for the development of the rest of the sprawling Harlem-based crew. First up after Rocky on the release schedule was A$AP Ferg, who dropped his debut, Trap Lord (RCA), in August. Like many a good lieutenant, Ferg is less imperious than Rocky, more relatable and human, not to mention funnier. Trap Lord combines the A$AP Mob’s trademark sonic futurism with untempered fanboy zeal for 90s rap that most obviously expresses itself in the form of cameos by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Onyx; standout track “Shabba” also holds up 90s dancehall icon Shabba Ranks as a symbol of all that is smooth and gangstafied. Ferg will be joined here by several compatriots from A$AP Mob, and while you never know exactly which members will show up for the gig, they’re consistently on fire. —Miles Raymer A$AP Mob, Joey Fatts & Aston Matthews, Overdoz, and the 100s open.
