Abigail's Party | A Red Orchid Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Abigail's Party Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 23 2010

Abigail is having a party, all right, but we're not at it. We're a few doors down, with Abigail's divorced mom, Susan, who's doing her valiant best to give her 15-year-old some space. Susan's been invited to hang out for the evening at Beverly and Laurence's place, as have a couple who just bought a home in another part of the suburban development somewhere in England. All five of them will drink too much and awful things will happen. This 1977 tragedy of manners by Mike Leigh--the auteur best known for films like Happy-Go-Lucky and Vera Drake--operates on the fool-around-and-fool-around-and-somebody-ends-up-in-tears principle: it makes dysfunction hugely amusing right up to the moment when the bottom falls out. Kirsten Fitzgerald is not to be missed as Beverly, the hostess with a strange talent for getting her guests to overcome their best instincts. --Tony Adler
