A van accident broke the stride of this heavy Massachusetts metalcore outfit just after the fall 2012 release of Death Is the Only Mortal, their sixth full-length (and first for Rise Records); more recently, longtime guitarist Dan Laskiewicz parted ways with the band, and it’s apparently taken two guys to replace him. The material on Death Is the Only Mortal is more than strong enough to get the Acacia Strain back up to speed, though—crunchy and varied, it shows willingness both to commit to a groove and to abandon it in the most whiplashing way possible at just the right moment. The shrill shredding of the guitars gives a dizzying complexity to “Dust and the Helix” and “The Chambered Nautilus”—and helps “Brain Death” live up to its name. —Monica Kendrick Xibalba, Fit for an Autopsy, and Bitter Thoughts open.
