Dear Ms. True:

The purpose of this letter is to express my concern regarding a display ad that appeared in the February 10 issue of the Chicago Reader [Section Four]. The ad that stated "Jewish Car for Sale" was particularly offending. While I am a supporter of freedom of the press and of expression I also believe that discretion must be used in instances like this one. This is clearly not a literary attempt of one to express their feelings towards Jews but rather a snide, cheap attempt at bad humor. I feel that as editor of the paper it is your responsibility to use your discretion in such circumstances. If indeed the paper is that desperate for the income received on such an advertisement perhaps it is time to call it quits. I do not imagine that is the case. I am a weekly reader of the Reader and sincerely hope this was just a careless oversight on behalf of the staff and that appropriate apologies to the Jewish community will be made.
