The Empty Bottle and British music magazine the Wire once again bring Chicago the Adventures in Modern Music festival, with five nights of exciting nonmainstream sounds from several continents. To call the lineup eclectic would be an understatement. LA-based global bass duo Nguzunguzu headline the first show on Wed 10/3, after sets by outsider-music legend R. Stevie Moore, Rob Mazurek's Brazilian-jazz fusion outfit Sao Paulo Underground, and others. Dark electronic act Demdike Stare (see Soundboard) headlines Thu 10/4, with openers including New Hampshire black-metal band Vattnet Viskar (see Soundboard) and Chicago improvising bassist Joshua Abrams and his Natural Information Society. On Fri 10/5 local experimental R&B duo Supreme Cuts, Krautrock-influenced Texas/London band Shit & Shine, and sound artist Duane Pitre (see Soundboard) are among the performers; on Sat 10/6 Chicago juke DJ Traxman anchors a bill that also includes minimalist composer Sylvain Chauveau and ambient musician Biosphere. The festival wraps up Sun 10/7 with avant-pop group Micachu & the Shapes, Manchester-based producer Holy Other (see In Rotation), drone artist Lee Noble, and more. Tickets for each show must be purchased separately; there are no festival passes. For full lineups and more info, see Fairs & Festivals listings by day, call 773-276-3600, or visit
