After Run the Jewels’ triumphant 2014, it’s easy to assume that rapper-producer El-P is the only person from his defunct Definitive Jux label that’s been up to anything new. But less than a month after Run the Jewels 2 dropped, two word-scrambling vets from the former underground hip-hop label—Ian Bavitz (aka Aesop Rock) and Rob Smith (aka Rob Sonic)—teamed up with DJ Big Wiz to drop a second album under the name Hail Mary Mallon. On November’s Bestiary (Rhymesayers) Bavitz and Smith deliver springy, playful lines that zigzag between and leapfrog over one another at dizzying speeds. The album’s threaded together by funny skits about a fund-raiser concert for a fictional bowling alley, but the freewheeling energy between Bavitz and Smith is the real glue. The MCs are acerbic as hell. For example, on “Whales” they lay waste to hip-hop’s culture of greed with satirical, ludicrous lines like “White-gold pants, jet ski made of wine / Foie gras bust of Albert Einstein.” —Leor Galil
