To the editors:

Thanks so much for Jackie Stevens's careful article several weeks ago [August 28]--which named and illustrated the misogyny underlying the aesthetic assumptions of film criticism and creative-arts criticism in general.

In my experience as an art psychotherapist, the real danger of these assumptions is that they are taught as though they were gender neutral and are then internalized by women as "inner critics" who function to undercut women's connection to and confidence in their work before it gets a chance to be made.

Making these assumptions conscious, it goes without saying, is the first step in going beyond them. Thanks again.
