Accolades are merited for the humane individuals and organizations that are ardently vying to spare injured and aged horses from being killed in inglorious slaughterhouses ["How to Avoid the Dog Food Factory," December 5]. It is outrageous that certain sinister individuals affiliated with the horse-racing industry are in complicity with heartless profiteers who earn money by mistreating and ultimately butchering wonderful equines. Legislation is pending in Illinois that will enable the state to outlaw the slaughter of horses. Legislators should also prohibit the monstrous slaughter of millions of bovines, pigs, lambs, turkeys, and all other sentient creatures. Meat is a by-product of animal genocide!
