Agnes Browne | Chicago Reader

Agnes Browne

A widow and mother of seven (Anjelica Huston) makes ends meet and meets her match in this mostly light romantic drama set in 1960s Dublin. Huston is utterly persuasive as Agnes, who in middle age is both practical and wonderfully girly. But the movie's strength is in its comedy; a tragic subplot feels merely manipulative. Huston directed; John Goldsmith wrote the screenplay with Brendan O'Carroll, who wrote the novel it's based on.
