Agnes of God | Chicago Reader

Agnes of God

Psychiatrist Jane Fonda and mother superior Anne Bancroft battle for the spiritual possession of a young nun (Meg Tilly) accused of killing her illegitimate child. This is high-toned, Big Subject movie making, in which the characters represent weighty concepts like “Reason” and “Faith” and they stand around cuing each other's speeches. Despite all the anguished huffing and puffing, there isn't a single authentic moment in it, and all you're left with in the end is the fading memory of two overscaled, Oscar-bait performances. Norman Jewison directed, true to the spirit of Stanley Kramer.
