Aida The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 1 2010

Elton John and Tim Rice's pop musical (which premiered here in 1999 before going on to a four-year Broadway run) is mediocrity incarnate. Based on Giuseppe Verdi's tale of a Nubian princess enslaved by an Egyptian general, who then falls in love with her even though he's betrothed to the pharaoh's daughter, the show suffers from simpleminded lyrics, undistinguished music, and a written-by-committee script that combines the stilted kitschiness of a DeMille epic with Disney-style cartoonishness. Still, Bailiwick Chicago has given it an intimate, unpretentious production, directed by Scott Ferguson and presented in association with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, that boasts clever costumes, imaginative lighting, solid dancing, strong lead vocals, and truly impressive choral singing. --Albert Williams
