Air Bud: Golden Receiver

This 1998 sequel to a 1997 animal action comedy finds a dramatic way of getting Buddy, a golden retriever with a knack for sports, on the junior-high football team; for the purposes of the first Air Bud, the dog and its owner (Kevin Zegers) were confirmed basketballers. But this movie is mostly slow, schmaltzy formula, full of insidious hypocrisy. The story, set in Washington State, mechanistically foists values on its target audience in the manner of an archetypal after-school special, though xenophobia may be an unintended lesson—Perry Anzilotti and Nora Dunn play Russian villains whose resemblance to Boris and Natasha of The Bullwinkle Show doesn't make them any less iconic. Richard Martin directed a screenplay by Paul Tamasy and Aaron Mendelsohn.
