Air Force One

U.S. president Harrison Ford proves that he knows the relative value of policy, ethics, and personal sacrifice when his plane is hijacked by terrorist Gary Oldman (who's so insecure he spends most of one scene begging an adolescent hostage for empathy). Ford and Oldman wholeheartedly accept their ridiculous characters, though Glenn Close, as the vice president, can't shed that last vestige of disdain for her role and simply makes you feel sorry for her. Director Wolfgang Petersen and writer Andrew Marlowe challenge us to take the story straight no matter what, but the only thing this ponderous 1997 thriller has going for it is unintentional humor. R, 124 min.
