Airline Miles | The Second Stage | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Airline Miles Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 12 2012

Retired bathroom-fixture salesman Richard goes ballistic when American Airlines rescinds his frequent-flyer privileges, hiring hot-shot attorney Brendan to challenge the move. Over a series of dinner meetings, lawyer and client gradually discover that their lives are linked through Bobby, Richard's troubled son and closeted Brendan's former lover. Playwright Hank Perritt packs these crafty, efficient interactions with dramatic intrigue as the sordid complications of both men's pasts turn their present relationship increasingly volatile. By contrast, multiple flashbacks to Brendan and Bobby's toxic affair merely demonstrate things we already know. Director Peter Connor coaxes compelling, nuanced performances from his cast, but he's flummoxed by multiple, unnecessary scene changes. —Justin Hayford
