Sisters Victoriah and Hannah Gabriela Banuelos seem comfortable with their preciousness, right down to their cutesy band name, Vic & Gab—they clearly know that their target demographic consists of suckers quick to fall for twee, jangly indie pop and sugary vocal hooks tailor-made for future smart-phone commercials. Of course, count me as one of those suckers. The Milwaukee band’s debut, Love of Mine (released on their own Blue Lola label), has already attracted comparisons to Tegan & Sara, like pretty much any album made by a sister duo inevitably will, but the Quins are more sinister and earnest than Vic & Gab. The opening track to Love of Mine (also its title track) is a bouncy, hypercolorful romp with an elastic, twangy bass line—even though it’s about a relationship bummer, it’s as well-suited for choreographed stage moves as any Prince song. —Kevin Warwick Aktar Aktar headlines.
