Alas! Alack! Zorro's Back! Free The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 27 2009

With its facile plotting, mediocre songs, and "meatball" humor, this musical melodrama spoof loosely based on the Zorro story seems meant for school-age kids. And sure enough, a quick Google search reveals several recent middle-school productions. (Pioneer Drama Services, the company that licenses the script, offers material "carefully selected to meet the specific needs of the educational and amateur market.") So it's hard to know why Quest Theatre Ensemble director Andrew Park would present it as grown-up theater, or why he would push his talented cast to such broad extremes that the already flat jokes are mostly trampled. Only Stephen Barker as Zorro manages to play it straight and earn real laughs. --Justin Hayford
