Alegria Recommended New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries) Brief Run (Theater)

When: March 4-7 2010

Originally conceived, in the early 1990s, to be performed under Cirque du Soleil's trademark tent, this gorgeous, spectacle-driven circus show has been reconfigured for the kind of arena spaces usually associated with rock concerts and sports events. Some of Alegria's original magic has been lost in the move from blue and gold canvas to cement and steel: instead of stepping into the fantasy, we watch it unfold on a thrust stage. Still, the visuals remain constantly surprising and delightful, and the performances are astonishing. Even standard circus acts--contortionists, clowns, acrobatic muscle men--are presented in ways that are fresh and free of the usual circus cliches. --Jack Helbig
