The psychologist-detective of James Patterson's best-selling thriller novels returns to the screen again after Kiss the Girls (1997) and Along Came a Spider (2001), though Morgan Freeman has ceded the role to Tyler Perry, who was good enough to leave his gigantic falsies at home. Clich├ęd, improbable, and frequently risible, this police procedural involves an elite assassin (Matthew Fox) who enjoys torturing his victims and taunting the hero over the phone in a diabolical game of cat and mouse. You have to wonder what Perry's devoted fan base of stout-hearted Christian women will think of a movie in which half the female characters are mutilated and/or murdered. Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) directed; with Edward Burns, Jean Reno, Cicely Tyson, and Giancarlo Esposito.
