Alex in Wonderland Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: April 13-May 26 2012

MidTangent Productions's fourth campy, oversexed fairy tale spoof has almost all the elements that made the previous three succeed: monstrously trashy costumes; cheap, punchy choreography; pop song parodies belted out (mostly in tune) by gung ho performers who rarely miss a chance to make foolishness sexy. And writer-directors Michael Elm and Tony Lewis have come up with a killer conceit. Facing a loveless marriage engineered by his money-grubbing mother, closeted Alex flees with a hip-hop white rabbit to a dreamland where kinked-out lovers help him discover libido and romance. What's missing is concision. Ideas get repeated multiple times in overextended scenes, while the white rabbit's unnecessary rap narration further gums the works. This two-hour show would work at half the running time. —Justin Hayford
