Alexandria | Chicago Reader

Having fled the title city in 1956, a renowned opera singer returns with her daughter for a concert, and after the young woman overhears gossip about mom's failed affair with a writer decades earlier, the diva supplies her with maddeningly different versions of the story. This languorous Greek romance (2001) echoes Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet in its multiple perspectives on relationships, as director Maria Iliou questions whether one can ever fully comprehend oneself or others. The flashbacks evoke pristine, almost sterile images of Egypt before Nasser: cotton floats unpicked on the wind, and the lovers, despite their ardor, never even break a sweat. In Greek, French, and Arabic with subtitles. 111 min.
