The large-screen format lends itself to the idea of bringing audiences “onstage,” here with musicians almost too famous to be interesting, and director Martyn Atkins even manages to seed these 67 minutes of concert and interview footage with themes and a story line. Things wax uncharacteristically self-referential for an Imax movie when Sting's quip about the size of his head on the big screen is followed by a shot of it on this bigger one. Atkins shows off two decades of experience in music television with his tempered use of cinematic tricks and his poetic attention to detail; footwear (or its absence) is one of several surprisingly expressive motifs underscoring the contrasts between music personalities and between genres, as Carlos Santana, Rob Thomas, Macy Gray, Al Green, the Dave Matthews Band, Moby, B.B. King, the Roots, Trey Anastasio, George Clinton, Mary J. Blige, Cheb Mami, Sheryl Crow, and Kid Rock comment on one another's musical heritage.
