All Ears

When: Sun., Jan. 25 2015

The power of Sherry Antonini's two-hour "sonic gathering," part of this year's Rhinofest, derives from its unusual format. Four hulking speakers paired on opposite sides frame an empty space; the only visible performance is the subtle pulsing of a single ruddy spotlight. Throughout, this sober exercise in serious listening benefits from the miracle of audience cooperation: on the night I attended, everyone was down to focus. The six recordings, though—Eagles-reminiscent rock, unintentionally funny personal history, grotesque vocal soundscapes—were still a thoroughly mixed bag. The clear high points came early with Beau O'Reilly's profound meditation on the unreliable nature of memory and Mark Booth's recording of clamoring, excited voices resolving into two little girls calmly contemplating infinity. It's the dopest. —Jena Cutie
