When: April 21-June 9 2012

Adapters Bob Fisher and Sara Gorsky keep the pronouns male, diluting the opportunities for a true gender bender. But this Mammals show contains sufficient wit and mystery to make it worthwhile for fans of Herman Melville's epic novel—and those of us who never quite made it all the way through. Despite some self-indulgent stretches, a high-octane cast—including Amy Harmon as a gaunt, feverish Ahab; Shantelle Szyper as a pitiable Pip; and Erin Orr, who, as Ishmael, reveals a late-breaking defiant streak to match the black eye she sports—find several moving interludes. Fisher's staging dials back the cheap-but-showy technical tricks of past Mammals outings, allowing the narrative to set the show's discursive but thoughtful course. —Kerry Reid
