All Hell Let Loose

Iranian actress Susan Taslimi makes her directorial debut with this trenchant 2002 drama about an emigre family in Stockholm. A prodigal daughter returns from the U.S. to Sweden for her younger sister's wedding; her parents believe she's been studying law, though in fact she's been working as a stripper. Even before the secret comes out, the father attempts to reassert his patriarchal authority; ultimately he's humiliated by the realization that he's lost control over all the women in his family—including the feisty, foulmouthed grandmother. A committed feminist, Taslimi clearly sides with the women, who reduce the father to a whimpering bundle of insecurities and old-order prejudices. In Farsi and Swedish with subtitles. 88 min.
