All Kinds of Crazy New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 18 2012

In her 90-minute monologue, Arlene Malinowski likens depression to a booby trap set for us by our genes and triggered by circumstances. One moment she was putting away the groceries, the next she was falling into a seemingly bottomless pit. It took her more than two years to pull herself out, during which time she learned that depression runs in her family (her paternal grandmother committed suicide), that her husband has saint-like reserves of patience, and that psychopharmacology is a frustratingly inexact science. Malinowski doesn't entirely avoid inspirational bromides, especially as she nears her pat ending. But the piece benefits from her truthfulness, observational wit (one therapist is described as a "professionally dressed Chilean sea bass"), and aversion to self-pity. —Zac Thompson
