Allegro | Chicago Reader

Christoffer Boe's high-toned sci-fi allegory (2005) is visually striking but also lugubrious and pretentious. Energetic childlike animations illustrate the emotional state of the protagonist, an eccentric piano virtuoso (Ulrich Thomsen) who's abandoned by his lover (Helena Christensen) and flees Copenhagen. When he returns a decade later, a wealthy eccentric (Henning Moritzen) invites him to revisit a city quarter now mysteriously surrounded by a transparent wall, and as the pianist navigates the zone's shifting mazes, he travels through time to confront his boyhood traumas—literally. Boe cites the influence of Tarkovsky, but Freud seems to have the upper hand. In Danish with subtitles. 91 min.
