Robert Zemeckis's World War II spy thriller opens in Casablanca, but really the whole thing takes place in Casablanca, with Brad Pitt as a dashing Canadian intelligence officer and Marion Cotillard as an alluring French Resistance fighter. Together they pull off the daring public execution of a German diplomat, and the bond they forge leads them into marriage and parenthood in London, but then the past comes back to haunt them. Zemeckis is a master of the big, broad Oscar-bait drama (Cast Away, Flight, The Walk), and he makes the most of a well-constructed screenplay by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises). The movie has nothing to say about its moment in history, which makes the premise seem generic, but there's always the pleasure of watching Pitt work; a charming goofball in his early career, he's improbably matured into his generation's Robert Redford. With Jared Harris, Lizzy Caplan, and Simon McBurney.
