When: Mon., Jan. 14, 9:30 p.m. 2013

Detroit postpunk band Child Bite gave us two ten-inch EPs of potent, concentrated evil in 2012: the harrowing Monomania in the spring and Vision Crimes last month (both on Joyful Noise Recordings). Their angular, jagged, rhythm-heavy skronk reaches past postrock into the kind of terrifying lashing out you might remember from Big Black and the Jesus Lizard. Front man Shawn Knight shrieks and roars his unnerving bad-trip mantras like a Mirror Universe motivational speaker, but he wouldn’t be nearly as effective without the convulsive propulsion of the awe-inspiring rhythm section. Given how heady and intense this stuff is, it’s probably a good thing that it comes in small doses—a full-length would send you straight into sensory overload. —Monica Kendrick Alma Negra headlines; Child Bite and Bear Claw open.
