Almost an Evening The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 8 2012

Ethan Coen's trio of absurdist finger exercises justifies the title: it's almost worth the effort, at least if you're already in Oak Park and looking for a no-strain diversion. In Waiting, a man hoping to get into heaven cools his heels through eons of bureaucratic blunders. Four Benches explores the aftermath of an accidental steam-bath killing. And the most solidly staged of the three, Debate, presents a show-within-a-show in which the Old and New Testament gods slug it out—the former reminding us that he gave us the ten commandments, "not the ten fucking suggestions." There's absolutely nothing groundbreaking or surprising here, but J. Christopher Brown's cast commit with goofball enthusiasm. —Kerry Reid
