Almost Heroes | Chicago Reader

Almost Heroes

If you can get past the inadvertent references to the lifestyle and death of its star, Chris Farley, this 1998 comedy set in the early American west isn't unwatchable, just bad. Farley and Matthew Perry play Lewis and Clark wannabes whose tense partnering and dubious leadership skills make their bumbling expedition with a semiloyal motley crew vaguely touching—because you feel sorry for the actors as each joke falls flat. Farley's bravura performance is painful to watch—his trademark ability to freak out on cue looks so debilitating it should have felled him long ago. Christopher Guest directed a screenplay by Mark Nutter, Tom Wolfe, and Boyde Hale.
