Ameba Aerial Dance Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through July 24 2010

Pitched somewhere between the circus arts and modern dance, "Time Flies" zooms by in an entertaining two hours. Ameba artistic director Chloe Jensen dominates the program of 14 pieces by eight choreographers with soulful, slow-moving works big on strength, balance, and symmetry. She has a great feel for the poetry of suspended bodies, especially in duets. Nadia Oussenko, meanwhile, delivers a welcome dose of humor in On Leash, in which two pissed-off Valkyries riding bungees catapult across the stage. The techno music can get old and ensemble pieces tend toward ho-hum choreography and muddy stage pictures, but overall "Time Flies" soars, lifted by the age-old allure of taking flight. --Laura Molzahn
